An over cast sky with a slight drizzle every now and then, the terrain doted with huge boulder, small and big hills with trees growing between them, lush green paddy fields spread like a carpet, and the River taking a serpentine path presents a mesmerizing and heavenly sight; yes, you guessed it right, this is Hampi during the monsoon!!!!

We a group of 5 Pediatricians with families and friends reached Timlapur village (which is between Agalkera and Anegundi) to see Tungabhadra river which was in spate as all the gates of the dam were opened because the inflow from the catchment areas was very high. As we reached the river we were amazed at the force and enormity of the water. The gushing sound of the water flowing at high speed is musical and pleasing to the ears. A lone bird sitting on a boulder in the middle of the river was a feast to the eye and all our amateur photographers.

High up on a betta (hill) hidden amongst huge boulders after nearly 45 minutes climb, we reached the summit panting for breath, our guide and ‘Pojari’ lead us to a small temple of “Bal Anjaneya.”
Just before we reached the summit there is an open cave and we all rested there and enjoyed the view of the river traveling towards the word famous ruins at Hampi. (Photo 2 & 3)
The view of the Tungabhadra River from this height is amazing. Tungabhadra travels through Lush green vegetation and boulders of various sizes and the twists and turns it takes presents a magnificent view.
Our climb up the betta was through uneven difficult terrain. We were a group of around 15 people consisting of senior citizens, women, men and children. I was amazed at the energy level of the children who climbed with utmost ease and reached the top before us.
Up from the very top we were able to see the other side, as the river takes a sharp turn after Sanapur guest house towards hampi.
We rested at the top for more than an hour and with much reluctance we climbed down hill towards our cars and to Dr. Jairam’s brothers farm house for a delicious lunch.
Hampi is surrounded by numerous betta’s. The well known ones are the Anjanadri betta, Matungeshwari betta, Rishimukha parvata, Maslain guuda and Durga betta. Each of these betta’s present wonderful views of Hampi and the surrounding terrain.
Being so close to Hampi I have had the good fortune of climbing almost all the Bettas around Hampi. You may call it a passion, adventurous attitude or a love for Hampi. Hampi is paradise for trekkers, rock climbers and photographers.
